How was NAFTA a Defining moment in canadian history?

I know it helpped create jobs and helped unify Canada the US and Mexico, but was it signifigant for any other reason. all the research i seem to find says the same thing, it helped the economy by creating jobs and it brought Canada closer to the US.. but is there more that i am missing?
